Real Madrid fan reporter Valeria Paz reflects on a solid first-leg win for her side in the Champions League quarter-finals
Last season we faced Chelsea with more security and confidence because we knew that being named champions of Spain was almost a done deal. However, facing them this time felt different, as we are not leading La Liga and we had not forgotten the tension from the round of 16. Nevertheless, something that helped keep me calm was remembering that Real Madrid had just won El Clásico at the Camp Nou in great style – and for Carlo Ancelotti, that match formed the basis of his line-up.
What I wanted to see most during this match was the dynamic duo of Karim Benzema and Vini Jr work their magic, and I was not disappointed. In the 21st minute, I could already hear the whole neighbourhood celebrating the all-important first goal of the night by Benzema, with Vini Jr's beautiful assist.
This pair always give me reason to smile, whether it's an outstanding goal or a viral celebration video in the dressing rooms. However, in this particular clash Vini Jr kept missing the target. However, I am sure that the Brazilian will be much sharper in the second leg, and I predict he will score in the first 20 minutes.
If you ask me, the best thing about the match was having the opportunity to remember why Marco Asensio is such a special footballer for this team. We can always count on his marvellous goals from outside the box when we least expect them, but need them the most. His performance during the second half was a reminder of his undeniable talent and how he can change the course of a match with a single strike. Even though he might not be staying for too much longer, I will always greatly appreciate him and hold fond memories.
Despite the first leg advantage for Real Madrid, the Blues are not to be underestimated. It will be interesting to see how both teams approach the second leg. But this is Ancelotti's Real Madrid we are talking about – they are no ordinary team in the Champions League.
