Paris Saint-Germain v Real Madrid

Real Madrid and Paris last met in the 2019 group stage.

First leg, 15 February
This is a big one, isn’t it? I think Real Madrid are just quietly going about doing quite well. I was initially dead set on Real winning it but then I changed my mind. Though I think Real will win the tie – they’ve just got that pedigree. And Paris lost to Real at this stage in 2018, so that’s in their heads. Psychological.

Prediction: 2-2

Sporting v Manchester City

Manchester City and Sporting have only ever met in the Europa League.

First leg, 15 February
City are my favourites to win the competition this year. They should have absolutely smashed Chelsea in the final last season. I was originally thinking Sporting won’t score, but they’re at home so they might nick one. You can score against City, you just have to get the ball off them. I mean, if Sporting win this one that’s an incredible result. Top tier, innit?

Prediction: 1-4

Salzburg v Bayern München

RB Salzburg last met Bayern München in the 2020 group stage.

First leg, 16 February
I didn’t know a lot about Salzburg and when I was doing research on my phone, it got to the bit on the District Line where the service starts to go a little bit. But I found out that they’re the first Austrian team to reach the knockouts, which tweaked my prediction. I had 3-0 to Bayern, but this is a bit like the FA Cup: Salzburg have got nothing to lose, have they? Underdog at home, first leg, atmosphere… oof. I’ve got to have one fruity prediction, haven’t I?

Prediction: 1-0

Inter Milan v Liverpool

Liverpool and Inter Milan played out a classic in 2008.

First leg, 16 February
This is a hard one. I think Inter are going to be knackered, because they’ve got Napoli tomorrow and they just played Roma and AC Milan. Though they won’t be walked all over and they know there are two legs, so they won’t be stupid about it. They’ll want to keep it tight, then go to Anfield and give it some in the away leg. But Liverpool are… very good. Maybe it hinges on whether there’s any conflict between Mo Salah and Sadio Mané after AFCON…

Prediction: 1-2
