Final
31 May 1972
I went to so many of Ajax’s home games in Europe during the Sixties and Seventies. Ajax ruled the world and I witnessed many memorable nights first hand, including the infamous “fog” match between Ajax and Liverpool in 1966. But there were other spectacular games too, against the likes of Benfica, Bayern München and Real Madrid.
But the most special of all was the 1972 European Cup final, when Ajax beat Inter Milan in Rotterdam. Winning European football’s biggest trophy in De Kuip, the home of our great rivals Feyenoord, was unbelievable.

I managed to to get hold of tickets through my tobacconist. I normally got my tickets there and when we reached the final I asked the shopkeeper if he could put me at the top of his list. He said he would do his best and in the end he got me two.
The atmosphere was incredible, just like it was at all those Ajax matches at the time. Inter had a good team back then, but Ajax were just world class. I took my neighbour to the match and we had really good seats, close to the goal where Johan Cruyff scored both of his (and the game’s) goals – the first with a free shot on goal and the second with a header between two opponents. It was magnificent.
After the final whistle, many fans went onto the pitch and we were among them celebrating while the Inter players lay around us, so disappointed after losing the game. We celebrated in the bars afterwards as well and there was a great party in Rotterdam, something which wouldn’t really be possible nowadays. That whole day, with Ajax winning the European Cup in De Kuip, is still one of the best of my life.
