Aitana Bonmatí
Even by her sky-high standards, Bonmatí has had an incredible year, culminating in winning the Ballon d’Or for the second year on the trot. To celebrate her success, adidas gifted the midfielder a pair of custom gold Predators; the boots feature metallic gold stripes and ivory detailing, as well as a golden soleplate and studs. To mark the historic occasion, ‘Aitana’ and ‘Back2Back’ are printed in gold on the side, and adidas photographed the star standing back-to-back with her previous year’s self, as an artistic nod to her double achievement. This continued a tradition of Barcelona superstars winning the award in consecutive years, joining the likes of Lionel Messi and team-mate Alexia Putellas, who also won it two years in a row.
Danny Baker
The highly-sought-after award for our recent favourite social media post goes to British writer and broadcaster Danny Baker, who somehow dug out this unbelievable football lookalike from the archives. Bertie Miller, winger for Scottish team East Fife in the 1960s and 70s, is the spitting image of a young Robert de Niro, looking just like the star as he appears in Midnight Run or Taxi Driver. The find got the CJ office buzzing with niche football lookalikes of our own. If you have any you've discovered, we'd love to hear them - let us know on social media @champsjournal!
Two to give away
In our last issue, we looked at the Ultimate Edition of EA SPORTS FC 25, the latest instalment of the storied football video game, featuring 17 of the world’s most coveted trophies and some of the biggest stars in the game on its cover. As a bonus easter egg, the cover also featured the bespoke handcrafted footballs that we talked to Jon-Paul Wheatley about in issue 20. There's lots to look forward to inside the game too, with revamped tactical setups and a new 5v5 rush mode added to all the classic playing modes - allowing for quicker gameplay, either solo or with friends. We now have copies to give away, so make your way to the competitions section of the website.
Oleksandr Zinchenko
The new book from Arsenal player and Ukrainian native Oleksandr Zinchenko is not your average footballer autobiography. Believe, published by Bloomsbury, sees the footballer sharing his journey from Ukraine to the heights of the Premier League; but it also explores his emotions around the conflict in his home nation, and his campaigning efforts to raise awareness and funds for the war effort. It’s clear that while his journey took him away from Ukraine early on in his career, his homeland is always close to his heart.
Adidas
The iconic adidas trefoil logo has mostly been reserved for stylish streetwear in recent years, occasionally finding its way onto off-pitch contemporary editions of football shirts too. However, this year you may have seen the logo back on the pitch as adidas mark their 75th anniversary. Five clubs have donned the classic logo on their third kits this season, as Real Madrid, Bayern München, Juventus, Arsenal and Manchester United all showcase distinctive features including unique club crests, chic collars and distinct cuffs. What's even better, is that we have a number of the shirts to give away, so head to our competitions page to try and grab one.
