Few players have left quite such an impression on the modern game as the Brazilian Ronaldo. With interview contributions from former team-mates such as Zinédine Zidane, Roberto Carlos, Paolo Maldini and more, this documentary covers the period between Brazil’s World Cup heartbreak in 1998 and their triumph in 2002, with the Real Madrid legend at the heart of both tournaments. It’s a redemption story for the striker that also features the story behind that haircut.
Adidas
Ahead of the World Cup, adidas have arrived with the Al Rihla (AKA The Journey) boot pack. Players will be lining up in Qatar with the colours and designs of the X Speedportal, Predator Edge and Copa Sense boots, reflecting the speed of the modern game and with inspiration drawn from the tournament’s surroundings. With some bold colours on show, this range is certainly not for the faint-hearted.

They’ve become known as the ‘casuals’, but there was nothing lackadaisical about the fans behind this cultural movement that took place on English football terraces. Beginning in the 1970s, it was a fusion of fashion and music that resulted in a distinctive look for fans in the stands. It was a style dominated by some specific brands – adidas chief among them – and had an effect on the world beyond football, making sportswear an acceptable form of leisurewear.
This exhibition celebrates the era through the work of artists who have been influenced by it; it’s on until 12 March at Liverpool’s Walker Art Gallery.

“The compact area forces you to be skilful, quick and strong, with fast decision-making, while the baiting atmosphere develops character.” Thus football scout-turned-author Callum Murray seeks to explains why concrete council estates have become such fertile breeding grounds for footballers, in a thoughtful study of the game’s new talent hotbeds. He cites Kylian Mbappé – a product of the Parisian banlieues – as a prime example, though the book’s strongest testimonies come from professionals who grew up playing cage football in English football’s rich talent seam of southeast London.
