Women’s Champions League

Alexia Putellas called it “magical” and you can see her point: 91,553 fans were at Camp Nou to witness her Bacelona side beat Real Madrid in the quarter-finals, setting a new record attendance for a women’s football match. There are yet more inspiring numbers: 158,930 fans went to the new group stage games and more than 14 million tuned in around the world on DAZN and YouTube to watch them live, in the competition’s first centralised TV deal. The Women’s Champions League is going places.

John Spurling

With Derby County winning the title twice in the 1970s, there is plenty to love about that decade (says our editor, a Rams fan) – and, as such, this book. Spurling does the decade justice with tales about the greatest names and most influential figures in the English game, who shaped its path for years to come. Insightful interviews make the European Cup exploits of the likes of Derby, as well as Liverpool and Nottingham Forest, feel fresh.

Documentary

Rooney

Derby County

A career spanning more than 18 years rolled into 144 minutes of highlights, interviews and archive footage, ranging from the highs and lows of teenage superstardom at Everton to the dugout pressures of Derby County. Famous faces appear throughout the film – including Thierry Henry, Rio Ferdinand and David Beckham – to sing
his praises.

Portman’s project

Angel City FC

Not be outdone by the Women’s Champions League, the women’s game is on the rise Stateside as well. And one team, as its sporting director and former Women’s Champions League star Eni Aluko has said, has quite the USP: “Natalie Portman is my boss.” Angel City FC are making their debut in the National Women’s Soccer League this season and among a long list of investors are Jessica Chastain, Billie Jean King and Christina Aguilera.

Simeone: Living Match by Match

Atlético de Madrid

“As an Atleti fan I was pleasantly surprised,” says our Champions Journalist fan reporter Carla Fernández Ariño. “Not only because you get an insight into our historic 2020/21 league-winning campaign, but also because of the number of important players and managers who have a cameo.”

She’s talking about the recent six-part docuseries on Diego Simeone, in which plenty of big names take the opportunity to extol his virtues. “Seeing the likes of Leo Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo speak about him the way they do shows just how respected he is. It was also heart-warming to see a more vulnerable side of him.”

However, Ariño hasn’t quite made it to the end of the series. “I couldn’t watch the last episode: it features Sergio Ramos and focuses on the two Champions League finals we lost to Real. Maybe one day…”
