From shirts and literature to a Champions League winner's podcast, here's some of the stuff that’s getting our attention

Issue 03

Team of the Eighties

Television – BT Sport

This documentary charts the fall and rise and fall of Crystal Palace between 1973 and 1980, with the 'rise' bit courtesy of a manager who would go on to take Barcelona to a European Cup final: Terry Venables (right). It was at Palace that he got his first gig and it’s fascinating to see where he started out (not least his taste in hairstyles and coats). Successive promotions from the Third Division to the First got him noticed and the players he took with him are nothing but complimentary: “Anyone who’s played for that man will be his disciple,” says one. An entertaining and insightful watch, narrated by Palace fan Bill Nighy.

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY

Shirt – Adidas

Think of anniversary kits and Manchester City’s minimalistic number from last year might come to mind; maybe Chelsea’s more recent FA Cup tribute. Or perhaps the iconic centenary jersey worn by Barcelona in 1999/2000? Latest to get in on the act are Bayern München, who have unveiled a smart special-edition kit to celebrate the club’s 120th birthday. Inspired by the outfit worn during their maiden German title campaign in 1932, this slick iteration features a burgundy collar and sleeves on a crystal-white backing, with off-white versions of the adidas logo and club crest.

The greatest game

Podcast – Jamie Carragher

“From the age of seven to 19, I knew no one who was better than me.” So Michael Owen tells Jamie Carragher in a poignant conversation that is the pick of the interviews in the latter’s The Greatest Game podcast series. “On the decline” by 21, Owen admits “the wound will never go” from being booed at Anfield after his return from Real Madrid. Ironically, he only wanted to “go for a year” but was denied the homecoming he craved. Worth a listen.

Allez les verts!

Collectors' item – St-Étienne

"Who are the strongest? Obviously it's the Greens!" A sample of the lyrics (they sound better in French) from Allez Les Verts! – the unmistakably 70s hymn to St-Étienne that is still a staple at the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard. The French side, featuring future France manager Jacques Santini in midfield, were gearing up for their European Cup final showdown with Bayern München in 1976 when fan and singer Jacques Bulostin – alias Monty – finally gave in to peer pressure to pen a song for the team. He certainly gave it his all: "I wrote it in ten minutes on my way out of the stadium," he later explained. The song was a big hit in France – but it couldn't prevent a 1-0 loss to Bayern at Hampden Park. All together now...
