For all the drama and excitement served up in the quarter-finals, one of the best moments of television came away from the pitch in Dortmund without a ball being kicked. Mic’d up and ready to go, TNT co-commentator Ally McCoist looks around as a massive bell rings out. Then again. “That cannae be AC/DC,” he says. “If a guitar comes in here it’s unbelievable.” Cue guitar. “It is! It’s Hells Bells, AC/DC.” Genuine excitement. To be fair, it is an amazing song; the first track on Side A of the Australian band’s classic Back in Black album.
Posted as a clip on Instagram, McCoist is clearly thrilled as Angus Young’s unmistakeable opening riff plays out over the BVB Stadion Dortmund sound system. “Cannae beat a bit of AC/DC, man,” continues McCoist, a smile breaking out across his face. As the drums kick in, McCoist, microphone in hand, plays along. Then a bit of air guitar. He is given instructions by his producer, but the former Rangers man, eyes closed, is somewhere else now. “They’re brilliant. I saw them at Glasgow Apollo 1980, that was the opening tune.” Lucky man. Dortmund’s comeback against Atlético was decent, but that show must have been something else.
