INTERVIEW Jérôme Vitoux

There’s no shortage of exciting young talent lighting up the Champions League this year, but one name that may have escaped your attention so far is Eliesse Ben Seghir. The 19-year-old attacking midfielder has helped Monaco win all three of their games so far, including a 2-1 upset over Barcelona. They’re currently fourth in the league phase standings, following giants like Liverpool and Manchester City closely, and although there’s a long way to go yet their story is one of the most intriguing so far this season. We caught up with Ben Seghir to hear about his career to date and what it’s like being in the illustrious competition at only 19.

It’s your first time participating in the Champions League. Tell us about that feeling when you step on that pitch and hear that infamous song.

It’s a dream, you hear this song all the time on TV or on the PlayStation when you play, but when you experience it for real, it’s an incredible feeling. It makes your stomach flutter, you think about it all the time and you can’t wait for the game to start so you can perform.

Our goal is to qualify in the top 24. We’re off to a good start, but there are still a lot of games left to play.

It’s never easy to talk about oneself, but let’s imagine someone who doesn’t know you, who hears about Eliesse Ben Seghir… What type of player is he?

Well, I’d say that Eliesse is someone who loves playing football above all, who has made it his passion, even more than the fact that it’s a job. I think he’s also a player who likes to give fans a good show when they come to watch the games. I know how it feels, I grew up with idols like Neymar who give the fans a good show, so I like to offer that, too. And yeah, Eliesse is a player who dribbles, who knows how to score, how to assist, who helps his teammates.

When you got here, you were just 16 years old. AS Monaco has many great ex-players. Tell us a bit about that, who was in the tunnel?

When you arrive at a club like Monaco, you know the history and all the great players who have played here, such as Thierry Henry, more recently Kylian Mbappé for our generation, [David] Trezeguet, and many more. It makes you dream, and know that it’s a club that works well, they’ve trained players like that. So, it forces you to believe in the project, and give it your all.

Sometimes, [former players] are there during our training sessions, they watch us in training. It’s always a pleasure to have the legends of this club watching us.

Do you remember your first match in Ligue 1?

Of course I do. It’s an unforgettable match. It was just after the international break, because it was the World Cup. So I had already started training with the pros, which allowed me to find my feet. I felt that the coach had faith in me, we were playing against [AJ] Auxerre, let’s say that the score wasn’t what we were hoping for at half-time,

so he decided to make some changes. And that’s where I said to myself, this is my chance, I’ve got to take it. So, I gave it my all, I was lucky that [Aleksandr] Golovin passed me the ball close to goal so I could score my first goal quite quickly. After that, I felt confident, so I scored a second goal, which gave us the three points.

Tell us about your coach Adi Hütter.

He is a coach who lives the games, who has huge emotions during the games and he shows them. He is not someone who keeps to himself, he is very expressive and it’s also what pushes us on the pitch. He pushes us to give everything, to give the best we can and to perform as well as we can to win.

He’s helped me improve a lot mentally. After I got injured, it has been complicated. So he helped me take my time and realise that not everything can be done in the blink of an eye, so I had to take my time. He also helped me improve defensively to help the team a bit more.

To finish, AS Monaco is celebrating its 100th birthday, what does that represent? What does it mean to you to wear these red and white colours?

Well, as players from the academy, it’s something we feel even more because we were trained at this club so to experience the 100th birthday is incredible. When we take a look at all the legends who played for the club, being a player there is fantastic, so we are all very happy.
